Maybe I can help track down the port building issue, too.

Cvsup is pretty much required. I haven't tried out the ports building
stuff -
it might be simple to fix.

I've not tried the serial driver. I think that on the iBook, one of the
ports
is connected directly to the modem. If it doesn't work, then the most
likely
cause is that the Macio ASIC cell that contains the modem hasn't been
enabled.
This is quite messy, and needs some higher level work to allow the drivers
to
call up to the bus parent to enable themselves. It's needed for the Wi-Fi
driver,
and also for the ATA drivers for sleep/unsleep, if that is ever supported.
The best place to look is the Linux code, and then NetBSD/OpenBSD code.
