I missed an important detail.

The online documentation shows the interfaces being added as aliases.
The carp(4) documentation shows the VIPs being assigned directly to an
interface.

Docs are good.  Just lazy eyes here.
Regardless, I think it should be in everyone's favor to simply ensure this
tidbit is pointed out and made explicit.
