That is very odd! It's rare for a machine without hardware problems to just die at essentially random parts of the install, but that's what yours appears to be doing. Since you say 2.2.5 runs just fine, I also can't really blame your hardware, but yeesh - it has all the hallmarks otherwise! :( Hmmmmmmmm. Without more evidence to go on, or physical access to the hardware, I'm not sure I can really diagnose this one.
