Then, in Appendix 3, "Punctuation and writing", we have: ``A full stop or (US) period is used sometimes, though not in this dictionary, in abbreviations: "Jan. e.g. a.m.".'' And I have found no rule there that says that the dot should be used in this case. This would also be fixed by the English police. AFAIK (not very well -- I haven't looked at an English grammar textbook for 31 years :-), a comma is almost always required after ``i.e.''. It seems to be be required here. Another ``if'' after the comma seems best too. Adding either the comma or the ``if'' fixes the whitespace. I can't believe it says exactly that :-). First, the normal abbreviation is "i.e.", not "ie". Second, "that is" is normally followed by a comma, and I think the rules for the comma aren't changes because something is abbreviated. Zgrepping in /usr/share/man/man1/* shows only 2 cases where ", that is" is not followed by a comma. These are both in systat.1, and both seem to need the comma to me.
