I was seeing in 4.4-STABLE from December 2001 and a recent 4.5-STABLE.
Downgrading to 4.3-RELEASE seems to have alleviated the problem :(

I haven't yet been able to look at the PnP settings in the BIOS due to
the machines being far away and the serial BIOS feature in the Tyan
motherboard in questions being so buggy it's unusable. *sigh*
