Try /usr/share/doc/en/articles/new-users/*

I wrote this 10-page how-to for users new to FreeBSD and UNIX back
in 1997, and while some of it's out of date, it answers questions
just like yours--in fact, that's the first one. Probably other
questions you have will be addressed there too.
