I just think that if we make it longer there would be a benefit to new users. By default there are options that are power user friendly (in this case the message doesn't stay long), but ill suited for new comers. I think it should be the other way around. If a setting can be changed and saved to a configuration file and the setting has a "friendly" mode then the default should be the friendly mode (ie the screen stays longer).
