I agree no one should be using ancient compilers but it may be that some downstream FreeBSD consumers are using custom compilers that still need a C90 or C89 support. As I wrote, I tried to get the core team to deprecate at least gcc-2.8.1 so I could use variadic macros in cdefs.h and there was no consensus. (The topic may still be under debate for for all I know) Pedro.
