XFree86 is pretty smart about laptops now, just as long as you don't over-spec your display's horizontal and vertical sync rates. Treat it as a 800x600 display (or whatever size it is). I just set up a Dell LX the other day and had to remind myself of this while I looked at a scrambled display. You might try using xf86config and select your chip type out of the card database.
