After more usage, the problem is not softupdates'. I am running just on the same system I was before with a week of uptime. The disks are all mounted async, and the kernel has no softupdates code. AFter a day of being up, the box got the same terrible symptom: utterly frozen. Considering that this only happened recently, I will try to CVSup to the kernel code I was running when I built my last kernel about a week ago, and from there see if I get the same stabiliyu as I had at that time. Once again, this does _not_ seem to be softupdates's fault at all.
