After more usage, the problem is not softupdates'. I am running
just on the same system I was before with a week of uptime. The disks
are all mounted async, and the kernel has no softupdates code. AFter
a day of being up, the box got the same terrible symptom: utterly
frozen. Considering that this only happened recently, I will try to
CVSup to the kernel code I was running when I built my last kernel about 
a week ago, and
from there see if I get the same stabiliyu as I had at that time. Once
again, this does _not_ seem to be softupdates's fault at all.
