I don't think that's fair, 4.0.1 sometimes works pretty well for
me, I have the dual head stuff setup and it's awesome.  It doesn't
work at all on my laptop however.

I'd say that if you want to upgrade, do a complete backup of your
existing X11 directory and if you can't get 4.0.1 working in 20-40
minutes then it's time to save yourself the fustration and go back
to 3.3.6.
