I cannot ping or otherwise send traffic between the two private networks. I have read and followed the directions I could find on the net, and have done what debugging I could, but am finally stumped. For the following discussion of my setup, I have attached a .tgz file for each gateway machine that includes all of the relevant configuration files. My setup is as follows: Network #1 (192.168.1.0/24) | | Gateway #1 (inner interface [xl0] = 192.168.1.1) (outer interface [fxp0] = xxx.yyy.40.122) | | (internet) | | Gateway #2 (outer interface [fxp0] = xxx.yyy.40.135) (inner interface [xl0] = 10.20.0.1) | | Network #2 (10.20.0.0/24) The result of my setup is that I get the gif0 interface created and configured properly (in tunnel mode, using ESP), and I setup my policy database using setkey. However, I cannot ping across the two networks. For instance, "ping -S 10.20.0.1 192.168.1.1" gets me nothing (all packets lost), and a "traceroute 192.168.1.1" (from 10.20.0.1) reports that there is no route to the host. When I use tcpdump to inspect traffic, I find that my ICMP requests are being forwarded through the external interface (fxp0), which tries to forward them to the internet, where our router naturally dumps them. I am under the impression that either the gif0 or xl0 interface ought to be receiving the packets, under the routing rules that the "ifconfig gif0 inet 10.20.0.1 192.168.1.1 netmask 255.255.255.0" command should set up. The kernel seems to be oblivious to the fact that there is a tunnel set up, and is happily forwarding *all* packets to the external interface, with no ESP encapsulation. netstat -sn reveals that there is some UDP key exchange traffic going on (at least, once I start racoon). However, there is *no* ESP traffic -- all the counters are zero. I have included the following files for each machine (tar/gzipped): 1) The VPN setup script (tunnel.sh) from my /usr/local/etc/rc.d directory 2) ipf.rules and ipnat.rules 3) rc.conf 4) racoon.conf and psk.txt 5) netstat -sn and -rn output 6) ifconfig output I have done the following: * Installed and setup IPFILTER and IPNAT. These are working great on their own, however there may be conflicts with IPSec that are caused by how I have filtering/NAT setup. IPFILTER is set up to allow ISAKMP traffic, as well as ESP protocol traffic through. * Compiled IPSec into the kernel on each machine with the following: options IPSEC options IPSEC_ESP options IPSEC_DEBUG pseudo-device gif 4 * Setup a VPN startup script which creates the gif0 interface, configures it, and uses setkey to setup IPSec policy. This script is attached, and is called "tunnel.sh". It gets run by being stuck in /usr/local/etc/rc.d. * Setup racooon to do automatic key exchange. I have setup a private shared key file, and then I have added an entry to rc.local to start racoon on boot. Racoon runs with a pretty straight racoon.conf file...
