It will maintain a list of ports it still needs to install, so you should be able to get back to your current state no matter how many failures you may encounter along the way. Depending on how old your installed packages are, your luck will vary. A fairly up-to-date tree with non-GNOME UPDATING items addressed should work without any problems.
