I found your july post while searching on another problem.
I fixed the no sound problem (play and record) by using the audio patch  
cable from line out (tv) to line in (sound card) then setting the mixer  
to not mute and up the levels on LINE and then fixed the recording  
issue by upping the levels on REC. Yep - turned out it was a mixer  
issue.
