I'm very grateful for your help. Sorry for my bad English... it
sometimes makes me write things I don't really mean %-} So this time,
I'll try to make things a little more explicit.

In fact, what I really mean is that I appended aliases to the rule
all, like this:

I used to send signals, but since nothing was working, I decided to
reboot (to be sure that no esoteric forces was taking over the
machine ;-)

I simply added the following line at the end of the original /etc/aliases:
toto: ccote
In French, toto means foobar... it's just a test. Obviously, ccote is
a valid user on the system.

Ok, I move mkaliases. But it doesn't appear in /var/yp/Makefile anyway.
Cut from /usr/src/usr.sbin/sendmail/RELEASE_NOTES:

Fix a problem that caused aliaswait to go into infinite recursion
if the @:@ metasymbol wasn't found in the alias file.

Here's the output of the above commands:

The command ypcat -k mail.aliases give me the same result than above
and yp_mkdb -u /var/yp/gandalf/mail.aliases in addition outputs the
following lines:

YP_MASTER_NAME gandalf.ec.camitel.com
YP_LAST_MODIFIED 843974963
YP_INPUT_FILE /etc/aliases

The dates of /etc/aliases, /etc/aliases.db and /var/yp/gandalf/mail.aliases
all correspond, so it seems that the files have been updated correctly...
Maybe something is missing on the client side? I will keep on working...
