There were two issues with the port until yesterday's update: - The Makefile logic itself assumed i386 and eventually the port was declared ONLY_FOR_ARCHS=i386. - As you mention, 0.59r itself is broken on alpha. There's a patch by Nils Faerber floating around that fixes this. Both of these should be fixed in the current version of the port.
