The user simply need to try the port collection if he need something. Anyway, he _will_ need an application wich is not in your default window manager, so he will try to use the ports. I think the only thing FreeBSD need is a nice window manager installed by default. "Do you want to install Blackbox, the default FreeBSD window manager?" Blackbox would be the better choice.
