Nowadays auto-neg almost always works for us, even for Fast Ethernet. We have Cisco-Extreme, Cisco-Juniper, Cisco-Cisco, Cisco-Riverstone and of course lots of Cisco-various hosts. Basically, things just work. We always use auto-neg for Gigabit Ethernet. 3-4 years ago the situation was different, and we always used to set speed/duplex. Not any more. Maybe you've been unlucky.
