I had this exact same problem on a 2.2.2-RELEASE box that was acting as a
router between two lans.

Changed the two 3c509's for a couple of 3c900 boards (vx driver) and the
problems went away.  I haven't even bothered using 3c509's with freebsd
since then.

My guess is 3c509 support is still 'buggy' :)
