I started some discussion on this several months ago.  I didn't get
anywhere, but TI make all the relevant programming information
available.  Also, there is a Linux driver for the ThunderLan chip (see
ftp://ftp.caldera.com/pub/stuff/tlan-0.30.tar.gz - or maybe a later
version) that we are using here on some Linux boxes here.  If I can't
escape getting stuck with a Compaq, I'll probably wind up having to
port or re-write the driver.

The other thing to look out for is the video card.  I did some
experiments here and found that Compaq appear to have done something
to their S3 card which makes it incompatible with XFree86.
