 Figured this one out. And it's slap-yourself-stupid easy. ;)
 
 I did not have a /var/tmp directory. I moved my */tmp dirs to a
 partition that had more room and forgot to repoint the symlinks.
 
 D'oh.
 
 Everything works just fine now.
