Thanks for the replies, I eventually decided to reinstall as I wanted to
compile with tcl.

Knowing how to correctly use the pqsql su was my main problem (I didn't
realise it tho). The automation of the ports (you gotta love em) took
care of near everything.

by using root to su into pgsql I could change the password then use that
password to su from any other user ... no probs, thanks anyways
