Thanks to everyone on their responses to this.  I have found several 
radio devices that will work with FreeBSD.

One option that Kenneth Stox pointed out (which seems like a great idea) 
is to get a scanner/short wave radio and use the FreeBSD box to control 
it - has anyone done this before?
