If you're posting through gmail, then sorry, I can't help you, as I'm
totally unfamiliar with the user interface.

What mailer are you using exactly?

Any decent e-mail client should automatically handle replying to
messages, and keeping the display of the list of messages in a nice,
threaded order.

Some suggested e-mail clients:

GUI: sylpheed/sylpheed-claws, evolution, xfmail

Text: mutt, pine

Reply with more details re: your setup and perhaps we can find a
solution to your problem.

Incidentally, questions of this sort are better directed to the
freebsd-questions mailing list.  :-)
