With regard to the missing interfaces, you need to read
/usr/src/UPDATING or the release notes when you upgrade.  You now create
gif devices with:

ifconfig gif<#> create

A number after the psuedo-device entry has no effect for gif.

As to crashing, I haven't seen that problem here.  I'm updating a system
for testing.
