FreeBSD doesn't use glibc at all. We have our own libc. 

The way to keep your system up to date is to use cvsup and make 
world; read 
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/cutting-edge.html
to find out what I'm talking about.
