It all depends on the company, the nature of the contracts that are signed requiring the Chinese walls, etc.... I've never seen one that really worked to prevent conflicts of interest. Besides, a "Chinese wall" implies that there are different people on each side of the wall. In this case, board members of the FreeBSD Foundation would be the SAME PEOPLE who made important strategic decisions for direct competitors of the companies involved.
