My mistake.
This was the static Motif build from http://www.freebsd.org/java that
I was having trouble with, but I could have used my Lesstif-linked
version (with debugging symbols intact) to check on the problem.
Sorry for the confusion (I knew I'd led everyone astray just
after I hit SEND).
