This is really an X question.

The setup of the screen is in /etc/XF86Config. There was a doc on the
web, named 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to XFree86 Video Timings', by Eric
S. Raymond <esr@snark.thyrsus.com>. It is no longer in the
orig. place. Search the web for video-modes.html. Someone must have
it.

This doc explains how to set the video timing for monitors.

Look on www.xfree86.org.

Possibly post to comp.windows.x.i386unix
