Most importantly, check the modem configuration, make sure it is sending a real carrier detect to the computer, and that it resets itself and hangs up the line when the DTR line is toggled, and that it is using rts/cts handshaking. Usaully, the modem configuration will say something like: &C1 &D2 , Check your modem manual to see what it uses exactly, and make sure that it is stored as default in the modems EEPROM.
