Actually it doesn't. The catpages actually take less space than the
manpages,
$ du -ck /usr/share/man/man* | grep total
7186 total
$ du -ck /usr/share/man/cat* | grep total
5899 total
And I'd hardly call less than 6 MB "a lot of space" on any modern
HDD.
