Disabling the plip0 driver (or any driver not needed) gives the same result. According to a colleague, the problem comes from the driver for "Adaptec aic7890/91 Ultra2 SCSI adapter". Workaround: Boot with 4.3-RELEASE (the last version that works with that hardware), install the binaries and compile an own kernel. (Not checked from my side.)
