Regarding the hardware vs software problem.  I can tell from my personal
experience that the synthetic tests do not cover everything that the FreeBSD
can exercise.  So, I wouldn't take it for granted that the hardware is not at
fault.

You also need to provide backtraces from your crashes.
They should be printed on the screen when the system crashes.
Also, please try to use kgdb that comes with the gdb port/package.
And use it on /boot/kernel/kernel.
