I witnessed. But I don't think we will be heading that way. Even if you have 40 modules in each category, this ought to work (ls saver*). It will work because we prefix every driver with it's type so they sort together. This would have worked for the ports tree as well. Another advantage of the flat model is that it's way easier to browse. IMHO it's a real pain to have descend into subdirectories, only to find out that you want to look in another one.
