You may have done or know this already, if so please ignore.

Since this was a very special change you will need to recompile your
kernel. 

If you have done this already try to boot the old kernel at boot prompt:

sd0:sd(1,a)kernel.old   

(Please check the boot message for exact syntax).

Also you may need to use /dev/MAKEDEV to update your disk
devices. Some have suggested you update the /dev/MAKEDEV script from
/usr/src/etc/etc.i386 first.
