You can remove the .xinitrc for the purposes of testing. 'exec twm' is
implicit, and 'exec gnome' is not the way to start up the GNOME
environment (exec gnome-session).

Do you get any errors back at the console? X will usually tell you
exactly what's causing it to die, though it doesn't always die
gracefully.
