His description of the cause: the problem was that OpenBSD issues 4-byte PCI configuration-space register reads/writes to consecutive 2-byte fields. In general this is benign, but it exposed 2 bugs in the bhyve PCI emulation wh= ere this wasn't being handled correctly.
