Subject:   Is Unix still popular as a front end anywhere?

I'm trying to decide whether I should follow Unix/X or Java to my dream job,
which is to write user-end apps for cutting edge workstations that run
anything but the most popular operating system right now.

What recommendations would anyone offer?
