Greg, Dave, Brandon, etal. Thanks for your replies and the correct answer was get the cd from IBM - apart from the reinstall issues it gives the opportunity to free up the space. The not so correct answer was change the partition types recovery partition (ad0s3) 28 -> 12 original partition (ad0s1) 12 -> 28 (actually originally 7 for ntfs) and boot to the recovery partition as DOS using the FreeBSD boot manager. Interestingly this does not appear to include the useful goodies like drivers for the WLAN card so until the cd arrives I'll have no network or any of the extras that IBM need to add to windows so that everything works. The BSD drivers for the card work out-of-the-box.
