Its ugly, but it does give you a reasonably accurate
representation of the view and the total size of the scrollable
area.  Unfortunately, everything else about it is a complete user
interface disaster.  It starts off with a *complete* disconnect
between manipulation affordances and actual manipulation methods
and goes downhill from there. 

The fact that to this day, people re-implement the same behavior
in new products completely baffles me.  I've been using the
things for years and I still fumble and curse when I have to use
them.
