These are all good questions and if someone who knows the answers  
can respond, I too would be thrilled.
I know the new OS-independent driver interface for XF86 makes it
possible for "linux" drivers to be run on FreeBSD, but I really have no
idea what all thise buzwords really mean. What does 3D acceleration
really mean? What operations doe sit do?
4x4 matrix ops? distance/colour mapping?
who knows.!?
