I'd say that if it were the CD-ROM drive that was the
problem, then the problem would have hit Linux and
Windows as well.

At the very least, it is probably worthwhile for the
maintainer(s) of the ata driver code to check for
funkiness in the code that's supposed to check the
cables, downgrade DMA speed, etc.
