Here's a top-of-the-head "solution" to this kind of problem in general: Make "mergemaster" smarter so that it could be easily told to warn people about changes in the existence or behavior of config file variables and fields and values as it processed the corresponding file. P.S. I'd like to see it smarter about other things too, mainly to work off the data, not the text, so that it wouldn't care if I rearranged things or added comments, etc, but this would require lots of duplicating of parsers (unless the whole config file "1001 Formats" thing is cleaned up). Also the ability to show the changes to the distributed config files instead of the differences between those and mine.
