When the system locks up, can you invoke the kernel debugger (ddb) by pressing Ctrl-PrtScr? (You need a kernel compiled with 'options DDB' for that.) If you can, could you set a crash dump device by setting the dumpdev variable in /etc/rc.conf to a suitable partition (your swap partition would probably do fine, if it is at least as large as your machine's physical memory), then, upon crashing, escape to ddb and give it a 'panic' command? Then you should follow the instructions at http://www.FreeBSD.org/handbook/kerneldebug.html and post the information obtained from the crash dump. If this is a SMP-related lockup, it is a bit unlikely that the system would allow you to invoke the debugger; still, it would be worth a try..
