I just did the update from 3.4-STABLE to 4.0-STABLE yesterday and I
agree that you need to follow the instructions for updating
closely. But I would strongly suggest against going to RELEASE. The
number of fixes in STABLE is huge and the update process is much
cleaner.

Aside from a mistake on my part, the update went very smoothly. I
recommend it. On my 450 MHz K6-II the buildworld took about 2.5 hours,
and the cvsup took forever (best with a fast network connection!), but
the rest only took about 2 hours.
