Just tried setting kern.maxusers=0 from the loader. The panic
is now indeed gone. 

For reasons I do not understand I get 'unable to transfer
the base dist from ftp://foo' all the time *while at the
same time* the 41 parts of base get transfered without
problems.

Whatever, this is not something I can attribute to 
maxusers :) so I'd think going for maxusers=0 for
autosizing is OK.
