Forte is an IDE and has nothing to do with Java per se.

http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/

The above link will get you started with Java.  You might pick up a good
book as well.  You milage will vary depending upon your current programming
experience.

Just to keep this related to FreeBSD, I would recommend you learn this on
the FreeBSD native JDK1.2.2b10.
