When installing /usr/ports/net/gaim with a standard make install it seems to depend on gnome-panel and gnome-core. Thus when gaim is launched it starts up the gnome panel with gaim as an applet.

make install
gaim &

When installing gaim, use
make WITHOUT_GNOME=yes install
