EBR works well under FreeBSD. You just can't modify it without kernel
recompilation. It is legacy partitioning scheme and I don't think the ability
to modify is really needed feature for FreeBSD. GPT has more features and well
supported in all systems, and it supports large disks and many partitions out
of the box.
