Regarding this problem... I really need to get my backups going again and the server hanging every night because of backup is not good at all. Hence my question - is it likely that the problem is caused by something particular to this brand/model of drive, which FreeBSD 6.3 "just doesn't like"? If so, what specific external USB HDDs have people had good luck with, so that if I buy a replacement drive I won't end up in the same mess again? -- Toomas ... Yes means No and No means Yes.
